5,000
people benefited

74%
of coverage in Colombia

10
Latin American countries

Approximately 754,000 people live in Colombia with reduced mobility; many of them require a prosthesis to replace a leg in order to have a decent life. In many cases, amputees do not receive the prosthesis that, in theory, the Colombian Health System guarantees, and obtaining them in a private way turns out to be too expensive to be within their reach. That is why Mahavir Kmina was born with the intention of "providing an excellent quality service at no cost to those who do not have the means to obtain a prosthesis," says its Co-founder Alfredo José Diez Ramírez.

In a decade of hard work, around 5,000 people from 416 municipalities in Colombia and 10 Latin American countries have benefited. It is important to the Corporation that our Mahavir Kmina beneficiaries obtain the necessary means to regain their mobility, rebuild their self-esteem and regain their independence.

Our challenge in figures

The war in Colombia has convinced us of the horrors of antipersonnel mines. However, in ten years working for amputees, we have discovered that there are other situations that could be causing a greater number of victims.

There are no current national data on this social problem, but our data is an indication of its situation in the country.

causas de amputación
  • Among all common diseases, diabetes is the cause of the majority of amputations, mainly among older adults.

  • In most cases, a motorcycle is involved in car accident amputations. The victim is usually the motorcyclist or his grill.

  • Other common causes are workplace accidents and snake bites.

Day to day in Mahavir Kmina

Every day something magical happens in Mahavir Kmina; every smile, every expression of happiness, every word of thanks are the greatestsatisfactions that we could receive for what we have been doing for more than 10 years selflessly. In this gallery, some of those key moments of our work are evidenced.

Our history

Mahavir Kmina was founded in 2007 on the initiative of businessman Alfredo José Díez from Antioquia, who dreamed of providing victims of landmines with a prosthesis to remedy part of the damage caused by the violence in Colombia.  No However, over the years, our service has been extended to people who have lost one or both lower limbs, due to any cause of amputation.
